A Brief Explanation of Goalball

Goalball originated in Austria in 1946 and is now played in 25 countries on five continents.

The playing surface is exactly the size of a volleyball court. 1.3 metres high nets extend the full width of the court at each end. Player movement is restricted to a team area extending forward 3 metres from their own goal line and is the full with of the goal. This "Team Area" has taped boundary lines and centre markings for player orientation.

Teams consist of three players. While standing in their own team area, players must attempt to score by "bowling" a ball the length of the court through the defending players and into their goal. Defenders must stretch their body on the floor in an attempt to block the ball. Each team alternate throws. A bowled ball must land on the court surface before the throw line. The throw line is also marked with tape and extends the full width of the court 3 metres from the front line of each team area.

The thick hollow ball is slightly larger than a basketball. It has four small holes to allow the sound of the bells inside to be more audible when it is in motion.

The game consists of two 7-minute periods, including stop-time.
